About the Role
Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) invites applications for the post of Associate Professor or Professor of Medical Statistics and Clinical Trials, who will also serve as Director of the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (BSCTU).
This senior academic role offers an outstanding opportunity to lead the only UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC)-registered Clinical Trials Unit in the Kent, Surrey and Sussex region. The BSCTU, based within the Department of Primary Care and Public Health, delivers a wide range of high-quality, UK-based trials and studies across multiple disciplines — including drug and device trials, digital health innovations, and behavioural and psychological interventions.
As Director, you will play a pivotal role in strengthening and expanding the CTU, enhancing research excellence across the regional health and academic sectors, and developing collaborations with national and international partners, including industry.
About You
You will be a senior statistician and academic leader with a strong research portfolio in medical statistics, clinical trials methodology, or related fields. You will bring significant experience in designing, leading, and managing complex research studies and building multidisciplinary teams.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Providing strategic leadership and direction for the BSCTU.
- Managing and supporting a team of statisticians, trial managers, and data specialists.
- Leading your own programme of research and securing external funding.
- Strengthening partnerships with NHS Trusts, academic collaborators, and industry.
- Representing the BSCTU nationally, including at the UKCRC Statisticians’ Network.
- As an Associate Professor or Professor, you will also contribute to the wider academic mission of BSMS through:
- Research leadership, mentoring, and supervision of postgraduate students.
- Teaching excellence, especially in statistics and clinical research design.
- Strategic engagement in School and University governance and development.
At Professorial level, you will demonstrate a sustained record of national and international leadership in research, education, and innovation, as well as a strong commitment to advancing the field of medical statistics and clinical trials.
