Job Description
About the Role
University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Medical Education and Leadership Fellow to support the professional growth and development of Locally Employed (LED) and Specialty and Associate Specialist (SAS) doctors.
This unique fellowship offers an exceptional opportunity to shape the educational and career development pathways for these key members of the medical workforce — particularly those pursuing CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) and GMC Portfolio Pathway routes.
As a Fellow, you will work at the intersection of education, leadership, and workforce innovation, developing impactful resources, policies, and training programmes that directly enhance clinical development and patient care outcomes.
This one-year fellowship is designed for a doctor at ST3+ (or equivalent) who wishes to gain leadership, educational design, and strategic workforce experience within a large, innovative NHS Trust.
Key Responsibilities
Educational Resource Development
Design and implement a digital CESR/Portfolio Hub, providing specialty-specific guidance, templates, checklists, and case studies to support career progression.
Education & Simulation Training
Deliver training programmes in leadership, communication, teamwork, and medical ethics; lead simulation-based education sessions and provide constructive feedback.
Mentorship & Peer Support
Establish a structured mentorship network connecting LEDs and SAS doctors with experienced consultants or successful CESR applicants; facilitate reflective practice groups and peer review sessions.
Workshops & Professional Development
Organise and deliver sessions on reflective writing, portfolio development, CESR applications, and quality improvement (QI) mapping.
Workforce Planning & Development
Collaborate with senior medical and educational leaders to identify CESR candidates and align opportunities with consultant-level competencies.
Policy & Strategic Leadership
Contribute to the development of Trust-wide CESR support policy and advocate for integration of CESR guidance into CPD and job planning frameworks.
About You
Essential Requirements:
Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).
Eligible to enter ST3+ training (or equivalent level of experience).

Demonstrated experience in medical education, including supervision, appraisal, and teaching of doctors, students, and multidisciplinary teams.
Sound knowledge of educational assessment methods and reflective practice.
Strong communication and teamwork skills, with a positive approach to multiprofessional collaboration.
Desirable Attributes
Postgraduate qualification in Medical Education, Leadership, or Management (e.g., PGCert, Diploma, MSc).
Experience in leadership or management roles.
Evidence of positive teaching feedback or teaching observation outcomes.
Experience in quality improvement or service development projects.
Experience presenting at local, regional, or national educational conferences.
