Job Description
About the Role
Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) is inviting applications for the position of Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of Oncology (depending on experience), which includes an honorary consultant contract at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSFT).
The successful candidate will lead on clinical trials and provide strategic clinical leadership as the Clinical Director for the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (CTU). Collaboration will be key — particularly with the Sussex Cancer Centre (based within UHSFT) and the Health and Care Research Partnership.
At Associate Professor level and above, this is a senior academic post requiring leadership in teaching, research, and school strategy. The appointee will be expected to secure research funding and foster the development of oncology research across Sussex. It is anticipated that this post will support the growth of a clinical academic oncology group within BSMS and the NHS Trust, with potential for future related appointments.
BSMS has established strengths in global health, infection, mental health, and translational haemato-oncology, and seeks to expand into other areas of medical and clinical oncology, both solid and haematological. The Sussex Cancer Research Centre (SCRC) brings together BSMS, the Universities of Sussex and Brighton, and NHS partners to deliver cutting-edge, interdisciplinary cancer research.
About You
The postholder will lead their own programme of research and oversee clinical trials, supported by the excellent laboratory, data, and research facilities available at BSMS and its partner universities.
You will conduct research within the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, contribute to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and provide mentorship to research-active clinicians and academics across Sussex.
A major focus of this role will be developing and expanding the cancer-focused clinical trial portfolio, increasing research income and clinical trial recruitment, and driving collaboration across multiple tumour sites — including gynaecological, breast, lung, gastrointestinal, and skin malignancies.
In teaching, you will play a leadership role in delivering BMBS medical education, supporting student-led oncology initiatives, and guiding students interested in oncology-related careers. You will also foster engagement with NHS partners to enhance clinical placements and research opportunities.
At Professorial level, you will demonstrate sustained excellence and national/international impact in research, education, and leadership, as well as contribute to formal School-level leadership.
The role includes a 0.5 FTE honorary consultant post at UHSFT, working clinically within the Department of Oncology. Applicants must hold a CCT in Medical or Clinical Oncology (or equivalent) and have completed specialist training.
