About the Role

The Department of History at the University of Sussex invites applications for the post of Assistant Professor in Modern History (fixed-term).

The successful candidate will contribute to teaching and assessment across a range of nineteenth- and twentieth-century history modules. Responsibilities will include delivering lectures and seminars, supervising undergraduate dissertations, providing student support, and undertaking marking and assessment duties.

You will be joining a collegial and innovative department known for its interdisciplinary focus and global, comparative approaches to historical enquiry. The department was ranked 4th in the UK for Impact in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF).

About You

You will hold a PhD in Modern History (or be near completion) and demonstrate expertise in one or more of the following areas:

History of Science

History of Emotions

Global and Connected Histories

You will have an emerging publication profile, experience of teaching in the UK higher education sector, and strong communication skills. A proven ability to support and engage students effectively is essential.
Experience supervising undergraduate dissertations is desirable.

Equally important is the ability to work collaboratively and contribute to a supportive, team-oriented academic environment.

This role has an eligible SOC code and meets the requirements for Skilled Worker Visa sponsorship
