Neonatal Staff Nurse (Band 5) – Join Our Expanding Team at UHSussex

Opportunity Overview

Are you a passionate nurse ready to make a real impact in neonatal care? We’re seeking dedicated Band 5 Neonatal Staff Nurses to join our dynamic service at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSussex). This role offers a chance to contribute to high-quality, family-centered care in a supportive environment that’s evolving and expanding.

This position is based primarily at the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) in Haywards Heath, with occasional rotations to the Trevor Mann Baby Unit at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. Our neonatal services span four locations across Sussex, ensuring a collaborative and comprehensive approach to care.

Visa Sponsorship Note: We are pleased to support eligible candidates through the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) Skilled Worker visa route. To qualify, you must satisfy UKVI’s criteria, such as the skill level, minimum salary threshold of £25,000, and any occupation-specific standards. For full details, visit the official UK Government Skilled Worker visa guidance.

Whether you’re a newly qualified nurse, an experienced Band 5 professional (with or without neonatal background), or a soon-to-graduate student, we welcome your application. This is an ideal entry point into specialised neonatal nursing, with tailored training to build your expertise.

About Our Neonatal Units

Our SCBU in Haywards Heath is a nurturing space for babies requiring special care, overseen by a skilled team of Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNPs) and Consultant Neonatologists. With eight dedicated special care cots, it focuses on stabilising and supporting infants in a compassionate setting.

In contrast, the Trevor Mann Baby Unit in Brighton operates as a state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), delivering advanced medical and surgical interventions. Equipped with 27 cots—including nine for intensive care, eight for high-dependency needs, and ten for special care—this unit handles complex cases while prioritising family involvement.

As we invest in service enhancements, this is an exciting moment to join us. You’ll receive mentorship for professional growth, including opportunities to explore personal interests through our special interest groups. We’re committed to your advancement, offering full guidance to complete the neonatal pathway—leading to a recognised qualification at degree or master’s level.

Key Responsibilities

In this Band 5 role, you’ll deliver exceptional, evidence-informed nursing to neonates and their families, primarily from the SCBU at Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Haywards Heath. To ensure operational resilience, you’ll provide cover at the Trevor Mann Baby Unit as needed, fostering flexibility across our sites.

Your core duties include:

  • Collaborating within a multidisciplinary team to assess, plan, and execute individualised care plans for neonates.
  • Upholding rigorous standards in documentation, adhering to best practices for accuracy and compliance.
  • Promoting family engagement by offering empathetic guidance, education, and emotional support during vulnerable times.
  • Championing effective communication to strengthen partnerships with colleagues, families, and external partners, ensuring seamless care transitions.

You’ll thrive here if you bring strong interpersonal skills, a commitment to research-driven practice, and a proactive mindset for continuous improvement.
