About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a compassionate and experienced Senior Healthcare Support Worker (SHCSW) to join our friendly and supportive Haematology and Chemotherapy Suite team at Southmead Hospital.
Our Chemotherapy Suite provides high-quality care and intravenous treatments for patients with blood cancers. We aim for excellence in every aspect of patient care, delivering safe, effective, and compassionate treatment in a calm and welcoming environment.
You will be a key member of the multidisciplinary team, working alongside registered nurses and medical staff to provide direct clinical support to patients undergoing complex treatments.
Treatments Provided Include:
Chemotherapy
Biologic therapies
Bisphosphonate infusions
Blood transfusions
Bone marrow biopsies
Main Responsibilities
Support registered nurses in preparing and initiating patient treatments, including recording observations via EOBS and monitoring vital signs.
Take blood samples, place and remove cannulas, and assist with bone marrow biopsy procedures.
Record accurate patient observations (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, oxygen saturation, glucose levels, etc.).
Support infection prevention and control measures, maintaining a safe and clean environment.
Provide holistic care and contribute to patient assessments under the supervision of registered practitioners.
Offer refreshments, reassurance, and information to patients and their families during treatments.
Support administrative duties such as admitting and discharging patients, updating electronic records, and maintaining accurate documentation.
Monitor and report any changes in patients’ condition promptly to the nursing team.
Maintain and check medical equipment, reporting any faults immediately.
Contribute to the promotion of health education and patient independence in line with Trust policies.
Work collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure seamless, high-quality care delivery.
About You
We are looking for someone who is:
Experienced in Hematology and/or Chemotherapy Clinics, currently working as a Senior Healthcare Support Worker (Band 3 or equivalent).
Passionate about providing excellent, compassionate patient care.
Organized, reliable, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
Confident in communicating effectively with patients, relatives, and healthcare professionals.
Willing to undertake further training and professional development relevant to the role.
You will also:
Meet the education and training requirements for a Senior Healthcare Support Worker post.
Be able to manage sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
Demonstrate strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining clinical standards.

Important Visa Information
Please note that this post does not currently meet the minimum salary requirement for a Skilled Worker visa.
As of 9 April 2025, the minimum annual salary threshold is £25,000.
While pay may vary based on NHS experience, most new starters are appointed at the bottom of the pay scale, which does not meet the new threshold.
