Job Description
About the role
Aston University is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) with strong mathematical expertise to join an interdisciplinary project investigating how neurodegenerative diseases affect neuronal culture structure. The study focuses on understanding neuronal connectivity, composition, and effective synaptic weights in diseased cultures.
The project uses neuronal firing activity data, recorded via microchip arrays from cultures generated through human induced pluripotent stem cells. These recordings will support the inference of culture structure and reveal how neurodegenerative diseases alter neuronal behavior. The successful candidate will develop and apply analytical and modelling tools to better understand the microscopic processes underlying these conditions.
Role responsibilities:
Develop theoretical models and inference methods to analyze dynamics in diseased neuronal cultures.
Apply statistical physics, Bayesian inference, and complex systems approaches.
Conduct simulations and validate models against experimental neuronal device data.
Collaborate closely with experimental partners to refine methods and approaches.
Disseminate findings through journal publications, conferences, and workshops.
Candidate requirements:
Strong background in mathematics, statistical physics, Bayesian inference, or related areas.
Experience with modelling dynamic systems and data-driven inference.
Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
