Job Description
About Us
The Department of Clinical and Movement Neurosciences is internationally recognized for research into rare and acquired neurodegenerative disorders. Within the department, Professors Spinazzola and Holt lead a pioneering research group in mitochondrial medicine. Their work has included the first discovery of pathological mutations in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and nuclear genes linked to mtDNA instability. Building on this foundation, the group continues to explore disease mechanisms and test potential therapies for currently incurable mitochondrial disorders.
The Role
We are seeking a Research Fellow to join Professors Spinazzola and Holt’s team, focusing on investigating how specific compounds may be used to treat mitochondrial diseases.
Your main project will explore compounds that selectively remove harmful mtDNA molecules (PMID: 34873176; 35478201; 38402076). The work will involve:
Studying the impact of small molecules on neurons and cardiomyocytes, the cell types most affected in mtDNA disorders.
Identifying metabolic states that encourage the selection of functional mtDNA.
Mapping the molecular events that connect mitochondrial dysfunction to disease progression.
As part of a collaborative team, you will use targeted and omic approaches with patient-derived stem cell models and transgenic mouse models. The findings will help advance treatments toward clinical application.
This role is funded until 30 April 2027.
About You
You will hold a PhD or MD in Neuroscience, Developmental Biology, Molecular Biology, or a related discipline. Essential skills include:
Strong expertise in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology
Experience working with stem cell-derived models
The position is open to international candidates and meets UKVI eligibility for a Skilled Worker visa or Global Talent visa.
What We Offer
Appointment as Research Fellow requires a PhD award. Candidates who have submitted their thesis but not yet been awarded will be appointed as Research Assistant (£39,148 – £41,833), with backdated promotion to Research Fellow upon award.
A comprehensive benefits package, including:
41 days’ holiday (27 days annual leave + 8 bank holidays + 6 closure days)
Defined benefit pension scheme
Cycle-to-work and season ticket loan schemes
Immigration loan support
On-site nursery and gym
