Job Description

About the Role

The Arctic is experiencing the fastest warming on Earth, with major consequences for both local and mid-latitude climates. Diminishing sea ice and increasing human activity in the region are raising vulnerability to extreme weather. Reliable forecasts are urgently needed, but current models may not fully capture fundamental differences between polar and mid-latitude atmospheric dynamics.

This project explores a new paradigm of polar dynamics, where vortices across multiple scales dominate, contrasting with the wave-driven dynamics of the mid-latitudes. The aim is to better understand these dynamics and their implications for predictability and climate.

The potholder will work closely with researchers at the University of Reading, the University of Oxford, and the Met Office, analysing observations and models to advance knowledge of Arctic weather systems.

Key Responsibilities

Characterize Arctic flow structures and their scales.

Use theory and idealized model simulations to explore vortex behaviour.

Test the new paradigm with case studies from the NERC Arctic Summertime Cyclones flight campaign (2022).

Analyze data from regional reanalyzes, quasi-geostrophic models, and Met Office operational/bespoke outputs.

Assess implications of findings for Arctic weather predictability.

About You

You will have:

A PhD (or near completion) in atmospheric science, physics, engineering, mathematics, or a related discipline, or equivalent research experience.

Proven skills in analyzing atmospheric observational, reanalysis, or model data.

Experience with atmospheric numerical modelling (idealized or complex).

Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with diverse research teams.

Motivation to apply your expertise to polar atmospheric dynamics.

Equality and Inclusion

The University of Reading is committed to diversity and inclusion. We support the Athena SWAN Charter, the Race Equality Charter, and are a Disability Confident Employer (Level 2). Applications for job-share, part-time, and flexible working are welcomed and will be considered where business needs allow.
