The Role

Aston University’s Energy & Bioproducts Research Institute (EBRI) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to join the prestigious UK–Saudi Waste2Energy project, funded through the Gulf Strategy Fund. This initiative strengthens collaboration between the UK and Saudi Arabia in the areas of sustainable waste management, biochar technology, and behavioural change policy.

This is a unique opportunity for a researcher who is passionate about combining academic expertise with international engagement and policy impact.

Key Responsibilities

As the PDRA, you will:

  • Lead the production of three bilingual market reports (biochar, plastics, and municipal solid waste) in collaboration with UK and Saudi stakeholders.
  • Play a central role in planning and delivering two major events in Riyadh: a UK–Saudi showcase and a Behavioural Change Policy Forum.
  • Coordinate a UK biochar technology exchange visit for Saudi partners.
  • Manage project monitoring and reporting, while supporting communications that highlight UK research strengths.
  • Facilitate stakeholder engagement across government, academia, and industry.

Candidate Profile

Essential:

  • A PhD (or near completion) in a relevant field such as environmental/chemical engineering, sustainability, policy studies, or circular economy.
  • Demonstrated experience in producing high-quality research outputs (e.g., policy or market reports).
  • Strong track record in project management, particularly in multi-partner or international collaborations.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Willingness to undertake international travel.

Desirable:

  • Expertise in waste valorisation or biochar technology.
  • Experience in SME or B2B engagement.
  • Familiarity with UK–Gulf partnerships.
  • Arabic language skills or experience producing bilingual outputs.
