Job Description
About the Role
The University of Sussex is seeking an experienced clinical and managerial leader to join our Wellbeing Services team, which covers Wellbeing, Therapeutic Services, Residential Life, and Chaplaincy. This is a particularly exciting time, as the service will be moving into a brand-new Wellbeing building alongside our on-campus GP practice.
We are looking for a mental health practitioner with strong leadership and administrative skills, ideally gained within an acute mental health or therapeutic setting. You will manage a team of therapists and practitioners, oversee caseload allocation, and ensure safe, effective delivery of mental health interventions for over 1,800 students annually. These interventions include psychodynamic therapy, CBT, psychoeducational workshops, proactive outreach, and wellbeing solutions.
As one of the Leads in Wellbeing Services, you will work closely with senior managers, mental health nurses, Residential Life Managers, and the Lead Chaplain, under the direction of the Head of Service. You will also collaborate with internal support teams (Advice & Guidance, Disability Support) and external NHS partners.
This role includes reviewing and improving systems, processes, and procedures to ensure efficiency, risk management, and high-quality service delivery.
About You
You should be a qualified and accredited therapist, social worker, mental health nurse, or other mental health professional with proven leadership and clinical experience. In addition to managing a diverse team (therapists, trainees, locums, and wellbeing practitioners), you may retain a small caseload to maintain your professional accreditation.
Essential attributes include:
Strong leadership, supervision, and case management skills
Excellent administrative and digital skills to oversee case management systems
Sound judgment, risk awareness, and the ability to manage sensitive and complex cases
Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills
The ability to work flexibly, under pressure, and collaboratively in a large organisation
About Our Division
The Student Experience Division works to ensure all Sussex students feel supported and engaged throughout their studies. Led by the Director of Student Experience, our services include Academic Quality, Student Data & Records, Careers & Entrepreneurship, Advice & Guidance, Complaints & Conduct, and Student Wellbeing.
We collaborate closely with academic Schools and Divisions to create a supportive environment that helps students achieve their goals.
