About the Project

The Nature Rich Miterdale Project is an ambitious partnership between the School of Earth and Environment, the National Trust, and Forestry England, aiming to restore wildlife-rich habitats across the Miterdale Valley in southwest Cumbria. This large-scale ecological restoration initiative is focused on tackling biodiversity loss, improving upland habitats, and supporting nature recovery in the Lake District National Park.

The Role

We are looking for a motivated and practical conservationist to join the Nature Rich Miter dale team.

Based in Miterdale, you will support the delivery of ecological restoration work, with a particular focus on the removal of invasive non-native rhododendron. You will also coordinate and deliver volunteer activities, assist with ecological monitoring, and help communicate project progress to a variety of stakeholders.

You will work closely with colleagues from the Restoring Hardknott Forest and Upper Duddon Landscape Recovery projects, as well as staff, contractors, and volunteers.

This is a hands-on role, requiring enthusiasm for conservation, strong practical skills, and the ability to work outdoors in remote and sometimes challenging conditions.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver practical ecological restoration activities, including removal of non-native rhododendron.

Organise, lead, and support volunteer activities.

Assist with ecological monitoring and data collection.

Work collaboratively with partner organizations, contractors, and community groups.

Communicate project updates and outcomes to stakeholders.

About You

The successful candidate will bring:

Experience of practical conservation and ecological restoration work.

Experience of working with volunteers in outdoor or remote environments.

Knowledge of ecological restoration and UK upland nature conservation.

Enthusiasm for hands-on fieldwork and delivering positive environmental change.

Ability to work flexibly and effectively within a small team.

Additional Information

This is a full-time role based in Miter dale, Cambria.
