About the Role

The University of Sussex is seeking an experienced and motivated Procurement Consultant to join its Strategic Procurement team. This is an exciting opportunity to make a real impact during a challenging financial period for the higher education sector.

You will work primarily within the newly formed SEM (Sustainability, Estates and Maintenance), Estates, and Facilities procurement category. A key focus of this role is to support the successful delivery of the University’s long-term Estates Capital Programme, including planned maintenance and a wide range of capital projects of varying size and complexity.

This role is critical in ensuring best value, compliance, and sustainability in procurement practices across the University.

Aligned with the Managerial level of the CIPS Global Standards, you will be expected to bring relevant qualifications or equivalent experience.

Key Responsibilities

Lead procurement processes, including sourcing, contract management, and supplier engagement.

Drive cost-efficiency, value for money, and improved supplier performance.

Develop and implement procurement strategies and maintain a category pipeline.

Ensure compliance with procurement regulations and support the University’s sustainability goals.

Represent Procurement on key University initiatives and mentor team members where required.

About You

You are a skilled procurement professional with a track record of delivering commercial value and managing risk in complex or regulated environments. Experience in the public sector, higher education, or similar industries is highly desirable.

You will bring:

Experience running tenders and managing supplier relationships.

Strong knowledge of public sector procurement frameworks such as the Public Contracts Regulations.

Confidence in engaging with a variety of stakeholders to support strategic decision-making.

A collaborative and adaptable mindset, with a commitment to continuous improvement.

Experience within SEM, Estates, or Facilities procurement is advantageous, but not essential.

This role is ideal for professionals from any sector who understand the demands of working in a regulated environment and are eager to contribute to meaningful, value-driven procurement.

About the Finance Division

The Finance Division, led by the Chief Finance Officer, provides high-quality financial and commercial services that support both daily operations and strategic ambitions across the University. The team includes around 80 staff who partner with academic and professional colleagues to:

Maintain efficient systems and processes.

Identify strategic and commercial opportunities.

Manage financial risk and enhance spending power.

Equip staff across the institution with financial skills and insights.
