Job Summary
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated Registered Nurse to join the Outpatients Department at The Royal London Hospital as a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse. This is a dynamic role requiring strong leadership skills to oversee a wide variety of surgical and medical clinics, including:
Plastic Surgery
General & Colorectal Surgery
Vascular Surgery
Urology
Renal Medicine
Neurosciences
Flexible Cystoscopy
Minor Surgery
Neuromuscular Biopsy Clinics
The postholder will coordinate daily operations across these clinics, manage staffing, and ensure high standards of patient care. You will also deputise for the Band 7 Outpatients Nurse Manager when required.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Oversee daily clinical activities and staff coordination within the outpatient clinics at Royal London and Mile End Hospitals.
Ensure adequate staffing levels and appropriate skill mix across departments.
Open and close outpatient clinics in line with operational needs.
Support junior staff development through mentoring, appraisals, and supervision.
Lead on quality improvement initiatives and audits.
Address patient and staff concerns or complaints effectively and professionally.
Participate in staff performance reviews, informal sickness management, and clinical governance.
Contribute to rota planning and support administrative responsibilities of the department.
Note: Clinics currently run Monday to Friday between 08:30–19:00, but the role may involve future evening and weekend shifts. Flexibility is essential.

Person Specification
Qualifications (Essential):
Registered Nurse with NMC registration
Minimum 3 years post-registration experience
At least 1 year’s recent experience in Outpatient nursing
Mentorship in Practice course or equivalent
Desirable:
Working towards or completed BSc in Nursing
Experience (Essential):
Inpatient ward experience (minimum 1 year)
Experience supervising or mentoring junior staff and students
Previous coordination of shifts or acting up in a senior role
Desirable:
Leadership experience
Complaint and conflict management
Experience in performance management
Knowledge & Skills (Essential):
Strong understanding of outpatient care and clinical pathways
Knowledge of quality indicators and patient safety standards
Ability to make clinical decisions, act as a role model, and lead by example
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Experience in wound care (e.g. nurse-led dressing clinics)
Desirable:
Audit and standards setting experience
Computer and IT skills (including rota planning systems)
Awareness of NHS budgetary constraints
Recruitment/interviewing skills
