Job Summary
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a proactive and technically skilled Education and Simulation Technician to support high-quality postgraduate medical education across our simulation centres and clinical teaching spaces. Working within the Medical Education team, the post holder will play a vital role in delivering immersive training experiences for resident doctors and other healthcare professionals.
You will provide hands-on technical support for simulation courses, including the setup and maintenance of high-fidelity manikins, virtual reality systems, wet lab preparations (using animal tissue), audio-visual equipment, and other medical simulation technologies.
The role is primarily based at St. James’s University Hospital, with occasional responsibilities at Leeds General Infirmary.
Key Responsibilities
Simulation Support:
Prepare and operate high-fidelity manikins (e.g. SimMan 3G), VR trainers, and AV systems for medical simulations across various clinical settings (e.g. ICU, A&E, theatres).
Course Preparation:
Set up teaching rooms, manage resources (including animal tissue for surgical teaching), and ensure all technical equipment is functional prior to courses.
Technical Problem Solving:
Provide real-time troubleshooting of simulation or AV equipment and resolve software/hardware issues as needed.
Documentation:
Develop and maintain accurate technical guides, equipment inventories, and course setup checklists to support consistent delivery of educational events.
Maintenance and Stock Control:
Perform regular checks and minor repairs on simulation equipment. Coordinate servicing and liaise with external suppliers when necessary. Maintain stock levels and support ordering processes.
Collaboration and Support:
Work closely with course administrators, faculty, porters, and industry partners. Deliver training to staff on the use of simulation equipment.
In-Situ Simulation Delivery:
Support on-site educational sessions within clinical departments, ensuring equipment setup and smooth operation of teaching scenarios.
Customer Service:
Uphold high standards of professionalism and support for faculty, clinicians, and trainees, ensuring a welcoming and efficient environment for all educational activities.
Essential Requirements
Experience
Prior experience working in a clinical or simulation-based environment
Competence in setting up and maintaining clinical skills or simulation equipment
Experience using AV systems and Microsoft Office software
Skills & Attributes
Strong IT proficiency, including use of MS Teams, Zoom, and digital AV tools
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to train and support faculty and staff in the use of simulation technologies
Strong organisational and time management skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Willingness to work flexibly, including occasional out-of-hours shifts
Qualifications
GCSEs in English and Maths (Grade C or above), or equivalent
IT BTEC/NVQ Level 4 or equivalent experience
Willingness to undertake further training or qualifications as required
Desirable Attributes
Previous experience as a Simulation Technician in an NHS or healthcare setting
Knowledge of wet lab practices and simulator maintenance
Experience using and maintaining VR simulation systems
Basic training/teaching qualifications or experience delivering training
Higher-level technical qualifications or demonstrable advanced skills

Additional Information
This role may require handling biological material (animal tissue) in compliance with health and safety policies.
The role includes on-call support for simulation sessions, including in-situ teaching across departments.
You may occasionally be asked to deputise for the Lead Technician.
