About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Humber Diabetic Eye Screening Programme as a Retinal Screening Photographer. We are looking for an enthusiastic, flexible, and motivated individual to support diabetic eye screening clinics across North and North East Lincolnshire.
In this patient-facing role, you will:
Perform visual acuity tests.
Administer eye drops.
Take digital retinal photographs of patients in a darkened environment.
Provide excellent patient care to ensure efficient clinic flow.
Full training will be provided in-house, including how to safely administer eye drops, conduct visual assessments, and operate retinal imaging equipment. Training will also prepare you to work within mobile screening units or fixed sites.
Main Responsibilities
Prepare patients for retinal screening, including administering drops and performing visual tests.
Capture high-quality retinal images using digital cameras.
Manage patients throughout their appointment with professionalism and care.
Maintain accurate patient records and data in line with NHS guidelines.
Travel between screening locations as required (travel expenses are not provided).
Contribute to a team delivering timely and effective diabetic eye screening services.
Maintain confidentiality and follow data protection regulations at all times.
Training and Qualification
You will be expected to complete the Health Screener Diploma in Retinal Screening.
The 4 core (mandatory) modules must be completed within 4 months to work independently.
The full diploma must be completed within 2 years of starting the role.
A dedicated mentor/assessor will support you throughout your training.
If you leave the Trust during the course or within a year of completing it, you may be required to reimburse training costs.
Person Specification
Essential:
GCSEs or equivalent in Maths and English Language.
Experience working in a public-facing or clinical setting.
Ability to stay calm and professional in challenging situations.
Able to work independently and manage time effectively.
Willingness and ability to travel regularly between locations using your own transport.
Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and working within data protection laws.
Willingness to work flexibly, including possible future weekend shifts.
Desirable:
Working towards or holding a Diabetic Retinal Screening qualification.
Experience within a Diabetic Eye Screening Programme.
Knowledge of diabetic retinopathy and screening pathways.
Experience with fundus camera equipment and screening systems (e.g. OptoMize).
Important Requirements
You must hold a full, valid UK driving licence.
You will be required to pass a Trust driving assessment.

This role is subject to an enhanced DBS check, including the Adults’ and Children’s Barred Lists.
