JOB SUMMARY

 

Salary: Around £50,000 per year, variable based on experience.

We provide flexible working options, including compressed hours, and work 35 hours per week.

Contract: Permanent.

Reports to: Lead Security Architect.

Location: Hybrid – Work from home with a designated hub office in London, Bristol, Manchester, or Oxford. Specific patterns for working in the office are not required, and the frequency of time spent in the office is determined by your manager. We value face-to-face meetings, so you may be required to go to one of our hub offices on occasion.

Cyber security at Jisc:

Jisc’s security team protects UK Education and Research from a wide range of cyber security risks, assisting our members and clients in increasing their digital resilience. We are dedicated to developing a comprehensive security solution that will enable institutions to defend against emerging cyber threats by encouraging collaboration and ongoing development.

We are actively developing our Security Operations Centre (SOC) services, which include Security Information and Event Management (SIEM), 24-hour security event monitoring, and endpoint detection and response.

About the role:

Working as part of the Architecture and Engineering team, you will be in charge of developing the threat intelligence platforms that power our Security Centre’s protective features.

You will need to apply your knowledge of threat intelligence, SIEM, and SOAR platforms as you collaborate with our threat intelligence teams to build effective ways to integrate and automate our SIEM, SOAR, and intelligence into efficient and correct data presentations for analysis.

You must be able to demonstrate previous experience designing and deploying technical solutions, as well as the confidence to provide professional assistance to technical programmes and projects of growing scope and complexity.

The responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with threat development and platform teams to securely install and manage the threat landscape.
  • Creating and maintaining platforms and applications to support the cyber security sector.
  • Monitoring the security state of services and infrastructure, including discovering and mitigating any security risks.
  • Creating and updating standards-compliant documentation for Jisc and the cyber security section.
  • To serve as an escalation point for users and services hosted on this infrastructure.
  • Continuous upgrades to present and future technology to ensure that we satisfy the needs of the business and our members.

Key Skill and Experience:

Need to have:

  • Experience in a security-focused function, as well as experience in software engineering, is beneficial.
  • demonstrated experience in designing and deploying technical solutions.
  • Knowledgeable about IaaS, SaaS, and Linux server administration.
  • Previous experience operating a range of popular web server technologies (such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, PHP, Ruby, Java, and Python).
  • Deploying, integrating, and managing a diverse set of proprietary and open-source systems.
  • Previous experience automating systems and processes and implementing resilience.
  • Good analytical skills and the capacity to work on many projects with tight deadlines.
  • Strong communication abilities, including the ability to discuss complicated technical topics with both technical and non-technical audiences and encourage them to adopt best practices.

Nice to have:

  • Qualified in threat intelligence, SIEM, and SOAR, or an equivalent.
  • An awareness of legislation governing incident response, network monitoring, investigations, and the handling of unlawful items.
  • Knowledge and experience with enterprise private, hybrid, and public cloud technologies.

Employees in all roles within our Jisc Cyber Security team must undergo enhanced background screening, which includes but is not limited to financial and unspent criminal record checks. This function may be required to obtain government security clearance to the SC level.

Some roles may also require full UK Security Check (SC) clearance; you must have lived in the UK for the last 5 years and be ready to go through this process. You must be able to obtain UK security clearance.
