Job Description

Postdoctoral Research Associate – Genome Transmission in Cryptococcus neoformans
Location: Institute of Cell Biology, University of Edinburgh
Contract: Full-time (35 hours per week), Fixed-term for 3 years
Salary: Grade UE07 (£40,497–£48,149 per annum, pro-rata for part-time)

Interview Date: Early August 2025

Join a Leading International Research Collaboration

The Jeyaprakash (link) and Hardwick (link) groups at the University of Edinburgh, in collaboration with the Sanyal group at JNCASR, Bengaluru (link), have secured major funding to investigate non-canonical mechanisms of genome transmission in the important human fungal pathogen, Cryptococcus neoformans.

We are now inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to join this dynamic and collaborative research programme. Based within the Jeyaprakash lab, you will explore the mechanisms and regulation of chromosome segregation and cell division—including the roles of polyploidy and aneuploidy—using cutting-edge techniques in structural biology, live-cell microscopy, genome engineering, and OMICS.

This is a full-time position; however, we welcome applicants interested in part-time or flexible working arrangements.

What You’ll Do

As a PDRA, you will contribute to a project funded by the Wellcome Trust as part of an 8-year programme focused on understanding unconventional genome transmission mechanisms in fungal pathogens. Your work will involve:

  • Designing and executing experiments involving cryo-electron microscopy (cryoEM), structural biology, and/or genome editing.
  • Collaborating with an international research network, including teams in Edinburgh, Bengaluru, and Munich.
  • Publishing high-impact research and presenting findings at international conferences.
  • Participating in the vibrant research environment of the Institute of Cell Biology, which hosts around 36 research groups and supports world-class discoveries in genome and cellular biology.

We’re looking for a motivated and curious scientist who brings:

  • A PhD (or near completion) in molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, or a related field.
  • Expertise in at least one of the following areas:
  • Single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryoEM)
  • Cryo-electron tomography
  • Protein biochemistry, including expression and purification (insect or yeast systems)
  • Single-molecule biophysics

You’ll be a strong team player with excellent communication skills and a passion for cutting-edge research.

What We Offer

As a valued member of the University of Edinburgh, you can expect:

  • A competitive salary and generous pension scheme.
  • A supportive, stimulating, and internationally connected working environment.
  • Access to world-class research infrastructure and professional development resources.
  • Inclusive policies and flexible working arrangements to support work–life balance.
