JOB SUMMARY

 

Job Purpose

You will work with Dr. Jonathan Stokes, Prof. Petra Meier, and the Systems Science team at the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit to explore the social determinants of health and health inequalities as a system, as well as model future local/global health projections (‘Health Futures’). The chosen candidate will also be expected to contribute to the development and submission of research articles and research proposals, as well as assist in managing and directing this complex and hard project as chances arise.

Main duties and responsibilities

Perform the following tasks in collaboration with and under the supervision of the Principal/Co Investigator:

1. Contribute to the literature review on the socioeconomic determinants of health and health disparities as a system.

2. Investigate the potential for modelling tools to predict future local/global health (‘Health Futures’).

3. Plan and carry out allocated research, either alone or collaboratively, in accordance with project deliverables and the project/group/school/college research strategy.

4. Document research output, including data analysis and interpretation, record-keeping and database management, and draughting technical/progress reports and papers as needed.

5. Develop and improve your research profile and reputation, as well as that of The University of Glasgow/School/Research Group, by contributing to international quality publications in high-profile/quality refereed journals, increasing research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering esteem indicators.

6. Contribute to the presentation of work at international and national conferences, as well as internal and external seminars, colloquia, and workshops, in order to build and strengthen our research profile.

7. Help identify prospective funding sources and build bids to seek financing from internal and external agencies for future research.

8. Collaborate with colleagues and attend team/group/meetings/seminars/workshops throughout the research group/school/college/university and the larger community.

9. Involve non-academic audiences in your study, either as partners, participants, collaborators, or research users.

10. Stay current on the latest developments in the field/discipline.

11. Participate in continuing professional development programs as needed.

12. Perform any other reasonable duties as assigned by the Head of School/Director of the Research Institute.

13. Contribute to the University’s international reputation in accordance with the University Strategy, World Changing Glasgow 2025.

Knowledge, qualifications, skills, and experience.

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1: SCQF Level 10 [Honours degree] in a relevant topic or cognate discipline, or its equivalent.

A2: A thorough understanding of current concerns and future directions in the social determinants of health and health disparities.

Desirable:

B1: An awarded [or recently submitted or nearing completion] PhD in subject specialisation or equivalent.

D1: Detailed theoretical and practical knowledge of individual-based modelling methodologies in public health.

Experience

Essential:

E1: Previous experience and understanding in conducting literature reviews.

E2: Sufficient relevant research experience [or equivalent] for an early career researcher.

E3: Project or subject-specific experience.

E4: Experience with scientific writing.

E5: Demonstrates the capacity to provide high-quality results on schedule and efficiently.

E6: Evidence of a growing body of publications in a relevant topic.

Terms & Conditions.

The annual salary for Grade 6 will be £32,332 – £36,024.

This position is full-time and has funding until March 31, 2025.
