Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

Astroscale UK is Astroscale UK is seeking a Computer Vision (CV) Engineer to join our team within the larger Algorithms Group.

Astroscale’s method for capturing uncontrolled space debris is very innovative, and it will help to reclaim our orbital ecosystems for future generations. This technology relies largely on intricate CV subsystems that allow our spacecraft to complete their missions. Rendezvous, proximity operations (RPO), and docking with uncontrolled and often unprepared objects is not an easy task; thus, we are searching for someone who is willing to work with a group of like-minded CV Engineers to confront the numerous obstacles ahead of us and help make history.

The CV team oversees all aspects of Astroscale’s CV subsystem, including algorithms, simulations, and hardware. As Senior CV Engineer, you will design and prototype CV algorithms for AS missions, as well as support the validation and testing campaign.

The chosen candidate will join an experienced and capable group of like-minded professionals who comprise the global CV team, bringing an ideal blend of CV experience from both the commercial and academic realms.

In addition to technical abilities, the successful candidate must be a team member who can deliver in accordance with the numerous drivers associated with commercial companies, whether contractual, scheduling, or otherwise.

Responsibilities

Successful applicants have the option to:

  • Create and implement unique computer vision algorithms for space object recognition and tracking, as well as 6 degrees of freedom pose estimation for space applications.
  • Support the procurement of CV hardware for astroscale missions.
  • Contribute to CV verification and validation planning and implementation.
  • Support CV subsystem testing activities, including hardware-in-the-loop.
  • Support the integration and testing of the CV software solution.
  • Support CV hardware procurement activities in collaboration with vendors and supply chain management engineers.
  • Collaborate with various technical disciplines (Systems, Guidance Navigation and Control (GNC), Flight Dynamics, etc.) to plan, design, and construct Astroscale missions/systems to assure software and hardware performance and compatibility.
  • As a part of the CV team, you can contribute to in-orbit operations by analysing CV hardware and algorithm performance and developing a commissioning plan for CV hardware.
  • Review the work of other engineers and provide guidance to more junior engineers in the field.
  • Conduct cutting-edge research into CV algorithm designs applicable to Astroscale’s missions.
  • Offer technical support for RPO bids and proposals.
  • Participate in system-level efforts, such as defining FMECA (Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis) and FDIR (Fault/Failure Detection, Isolation, and Recovery) processes.

Essential Skills

  • Degree-level expertise of an engineering, scientific, or mathematical discipline, or equivalent science/engineering experience.
