JOB SUMMARY

 

Job Purpose

The University of Glasgow is looking for a skilled and motivated Senior Project Manager to provide senior project management support in the School of Health and Wellbeing. The postholder will assist with project oversight, research governance, project risk management, and data sharing throughout the School as needed.

Initially, the postholder will be in charge of overseeing the Population Health Research Facility, which provides professional, personalised support to researchers working in community and NHS settings. This facility is now housed at the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit (SPHSU), which is undergoing transition. As a result, a major issue will be to ensure that projects remain compliant with appropriate research governance standards and that ongoing commitments are met during this period of transition.

The post will subsequently shift to provide project management support within the School of Health and Wellbeing. The postholder will bring considerable skills and experience in research governance, data management, project management, and leadership to assist with the delivery of important projects within the School.

 

Main duties and responsibilities

1. Take the lead in liaising with principal investigators, researchers, trial managers, and other project staff to ensure that projects run smoothly and efficiently. This includes: (i) providing senior project management with specialised support and direction for complicated studies; (ii) assuming responsibility for conveying optimal project management practice; and (iii) maintaining good communication between project teams, research delivery, and support workers.

2. Plan, develop, organise, and maintain project-related documentation and records. This includes preparing reports for funders.

3. Manage resources/budgets within assigned projects/teams to guarantee optimum value for resources deployed.

4. Implement a strong and responsive risk management strategy to identify, assess, monitor, and actively manage risks.

5. Take the lead in supervising research governance and data management, ensuring that projects meet their research governance obligations as well as any associated assurance or audit needs.

6. Manage governance groups to establish, monitor, and optimise research project processes and implementation.

7. Represent research delivery and support roles on key decision-making bodies, such as the Glasgow Clinical Trials Unit.

8. Monitor projects for major violations of research protocol or reputational damage to the School and University, and communicate any findings to the appropriate senior officials.

9. Provide project management expertise to funding submissions from the School as needed.

10. Line manages a small team of professional services professionals at the Population Health Research Facility.

11. Maintain awareness of issues such as data privacy, ethics, and health and safety when conducting fieldwork and collecting data in the community.

12. Participate in acceptable professional development activities as needed.

13. The functions of the job specified are not exhaustive, and the post holder will be expected to perform additional activities as reasonably requested by the Head of School of Health & Wellbeing. The post’s duties will be reviewed in response to changing internal and external requirements.

 

Knowledge, qualifications, skills, and experience.

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1. Capability to demonstrate the abilities required to perform the duties of this level of job, having gained the relevant professional knowledge and management skills in a similar or number of other specialty roles.

Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9,10, or 11 (Ordinary/Honours Degree, Post Graduate Qualification), or equivalent, including professional qualification in a relevant area and extensive professional experience in managerial roles.

A2. Extensive experience in project/trial management, with a strong track record of delivery.

A3. A thorough understanding of the regulatory framework that oversees research.

A4. Knowledge and awareness of data integrity and its significance.

A5. Understanding budgetary systems, managing budgets, and assessing financial data.

Desirable:

B1 Project Management qualification and in-depth knowledge of project management approaches.

D2. Strong IT background, including understanding of data management requirements.

D3. An understanding of the grant application process.

D4. Understanding of social, public health, and medical research.

Experience

Essential

E1. Significant project management experience in a research or comparable setting, with expertise in project progress reporting, staff and client interface, leadership, and training.

E2. Experience developing critical resources such as protocols, operations manuals, standard operating procedures, and guidance documents, or shown evidence of similar experience in the relevant area.

E3. Experience with budget management.

E4. Experience managing employees.

Desirable

F1. Strong IT abilities in project/trial management (e.g., database, spreadsheet, word processing, layout, and presentation), as well as the capacity to learn new skills as technology advances.

F2. Experience working in a regulated scientific/technical/medical research environment, such as clinical trials, epidemiological studies, or sociological surveys.

F3. Experience supporting research funding applications, including cost estimates.

Terms & Conditions.

The annual salary for Grade 8 will range between £48,350 and £56,021.

This position is full-time and has a fixed term ending on September 30, 2027.
