An opportunity has become available for an organised, approachable and proactive individual to join the Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU3) as a Ward Clerk at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

This is a pivotal front-facing role within a fast-paced clinical environment. You will act as the central point of communication for patients, families and staff — helping to ensure the ward runs efficiently while maintaining a calm, professional and compassionate presence at all times.

Your Role in EAU3

Working within the Emergency Assessment Unit, you will support clinical teams by ensuring administrative processes run smoothly and communication flows effectively.

What you will be responsible for:

Patient & Visitor Support

  • Welcoming patients and visitors in a professional and courteous manner
  • Acting as the first point of contact for enquiries
  • Ensuring patient privacy, dignity and confidentiality are upheld at all times

Communication & Coordination

  • Answering and directing calls accurately
  • Maintaining clear communication between patients, relatives and the clinical team
  • Escalating complaints or concerns to the nurse in charge
  • Liaising with multi-professional teams across the Trust

Administrative Duties

  • Updating admission and discharge records
  • Maintaining accurate data on Trust systems such as EPIC
  • Booking appointments, transport and inter-ward transfers
  • Managing ward stock levels and placing orders
  • Photocopying, filing and retrieving medical records
  • Processing incoming mail
  • Supporting orientation of new staff (within ward clerk remit)
  • Performing basic IT troubleshooting (printer and computer checks)
  • You will need to manage multiple tasks efficiently while maintaining attention to detail.

What We’re Looking For

Essential Requirements

Qualifications

  • GCSE level education (or equivalent)
  • Numerate and literate

Experience

  • Experience using IT packages (e.g., Microsoft Office/Outlook)
  • Experience organising straightforward tasks to agreed timescales
  • Previous relevant administrative or clerical experience

Knowledge & Skills

  • Understanding of confidentiality and data protection
  • Strong communication skills (face-to-face, email, telephone)
  • Ability to follow procedures and work within set guidelines
  • Good organisational skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Comfortable working under pressure
  • Willingness to learn and adapt

Desirable

  • Experience in an office, reception or healthcare setting
  • Previous NHS experience
  • Call handling experience
  • Knowledge of filing systems
  • Touch typing skills
