Job Overview
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated and forward-thinking Consultant Obstetrician with a specialist interest in Maternal Medicine and Fetal Care to join its expanding obstetrics team.
This is a full-time (10 PA), permanent position, with a split of 8.5 DCC and 1.5 SPA, and participation in an obstetrics-only on-call rota (1:12).
The post has been created to strengthen high-risk obstetric services and support the development of a dedicated elective caesarean section service.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver high-quality obstetric care across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings
Lead fetal monitoring services across Musgrove Park and Yeovil District Hospitals
Perform fetal growth scans and Doppler assessments for small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and growth-restricted pregnancies
Run:
Weekly ultrasound scan clinics
Fortnightly high-risk antenatal clinics (e.g. preterm birth, diabetes, epilepsy, maternal medicine)
Undertake elective caesarean section lists and triage duties
Participate in consultant-led ward rounds (twice daily during on-call)
Supervise, train, and support junior medical staff
Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement
Engage in research, teaching, and service innovation
About the Role
This is an obstetrics-only position, with no gynaecology commitments. The successful candidate will work in a collaborative, inclusive team delivering near-tertiary level care within a district general hospital setting.
You will also act as Fetal Monitoring Lead, supporting:
Training and education
Compliance and governance
Service development across sites
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
Full GMC registration with licence to practise
MRCOG (or equivalent)
CCT in Obstetrics & Gynaecology (or within 6 months)
MBBS or equivalent
Desirable Qualifications
MSc or higher degree
SITM in Maternal Medicine / Fetal Care
Qualification in medical education
Experience & Skills
Essential
Extensive experience in obstetrics
Expertise in high-risk pregnancy management
Competence in fetal growth scanning and Doppler ultrasound
Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams
Desirable
Labour ward leadership experience
Advanced obstetric practice

This role requires a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
