About the Opportunity
Brighton and Sussex Medical School is inviting applications for a senior academic clinician to join as either an Associate Professor or Professor of Oncology, depending on experience. This is a rare opportunity to combine high-impact academic research with clinical leadership, while shaping the future of cancer trials across Sussex.
The successful candidate will also hold an Honorary Consultant position with University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, contributing directly to patient care within oncology services.
A key element of this role is leading the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) and strengthening collaboration with the Sussex Cancer Research Centre and wider regional partners.
What You’ll Be Doing
 Research & Innovation
You will:
Lead an independent, externally funded oncology research programme
Drive the development and expansion of clinical trials, especially in both solid tumours and haematological malignancies
Secure competitive research funding and grow Sussex’s oncology research portfolio
Build collaborations across universities, NHS partners, and international networks
 Clinical Leadership
In your NHS consultant role, you will:
- Contribute to oncology service delivery within the Trust
Provide strategic leadership for the Clinical Trials Unit (CTU)
Support increased patient recruitment into clinical trials
Help shape future cancer services and research integration
 Teaching & Academic Leadership
You will:
- Deliver research-led teaching across undergraduate (BMBS) and postgraduate programmes
Mentor junior academics, clinicians, and research staff
Lead curriculum innovation in oncology education
Support student research projects, placements, and career development
For applicants at Professor level, additional expectations include:
- National and international academic leadership
Sustained excellence in research, education, and institutional leadership
Contribution to strategic decision-making at School level
Research Environment
BSMS offers a strong and collaborative research culture, with particular strengths in:
- Translational haemato-oncology
Global health and infection
Mental health and population health
This role is designed to expand oncology research into new domains, including:
- Breast, lung, gastrointestinal, skin, and gynaecological cancers
Post-licensing and optimisation trials
Health inequalities and coastal community health
Laboratory space and infrastructure support are available where required.
About You
You should:
- Hold a CCT in Clinical Oncology or Medical Oncology
Be eligible for (or already hold) consultant registration in the UK
Have a strong track record in clinical trials and research funding
Demonstrate leadership in academic medicine and multidisciplinary collaboration
Be passionate about teaching, mentoring, and developing future clinicians
