Role Overview
Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced Associate Trust Solicitor or Barrister to join its in-house Legal Services team. This permanent position offers an opportunity to contribute to one of the world’s leading paediatric hospitals while supporting clinicians and senior managers on complex legal matters affecting children’s healthcare.
The successful candidate will provide legal advice across a wide range of issues within a hospital environment. This includes areas such as safeguarding, consent, mental capacity, data protection, and complex court proceedings involving children and families.
This role is ideal for a legal professional who can identify emerging legal risks, offer practical solutions, and help shape policies that support safe and effective healthcare delivery.
Hybrid working options may be available, although the role is primarily based at the hospital in London.
Key Responsibilities
Legal Case Management
- Assist with managing a varied caseload of healthcare-related legal matters across the Trust.
- Provide support in High Court, Family Court, and Court of Protection cases.
- Work collaboratively with the Trust Solicitor, Trust Barrister, and their deputies on complex legal proceedings.
Legal Advice and Policy Development
- Provide clear and practical legal guidance to clinicians, managers, and hospital departments.
- Stay informed about developments in healthcare law and ensure policies remain compliant with national legislation.
- Support the development of organisational policies and guidance relating to legal and regulatory compliance.
Specialist Legal Areas
The postholder will provide advice in several areas relevant to paediatric healthcare, including:
- Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) and Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS)
- Mental Capacity Act (MCA)
- Mental Health Act (MHA)
- Safeguarding and consent law
- Data protection and confidentiality
- Inquests and judicial proceedings involving healthcare services
Service Improvement and Learning
- Identify learning opportunities arising from litigation, complaints, or inquest findings.
- Work with clinical leaders to ensure lessons learned translate into improvements in patient care and practice standards.
- Support organisational learning and risk management initiatives.
- Leadership and Team Management
- Provide leadership and support within the Legal Services department.
- Assist with performance management, development, and training of legal staff.
Line manage relevant team members, which may include:
- Data Protection team members
- Inquests and criminal case coordinators
- Claims management staff
- Paralegals

Person Specification
Professional Qualifications
Applicants must have:
- A recognised professional qualification as a Solicitor or Barrister.
- Professional registration with either the
- Law Society of England and Wales or
- Bar Standards Board.
- For barristers, authorisation from the Bar Standards Board to conduct litigation in employment matters, or eligibility to obtain this.
Desirable qualification
- Higher Rights of Audience (Civil).
Experience and Knowledge
Essential experience includes:
- Strong familiarity with legal procedures and documentation.
- Ability to maintain concentration when dealing with complex casework over extended periods.
- Experience working with Microsoft Office and digital case management systems.
Desirable experience:
Advising on children’s law or healthcare law matters.
Knowledge of legal issues relating to:
- Mental capacity and consent
- Deprivation of liberty
- Inquests and public inquiries
- Clinical negligence claims
- Freedom of Information and data protection legislation
- Judicial review procedures
- Experience providing legal services within the NHS or public sector organisations is advantageous.
