Role Overview

An excellent opportunity is available for a Consultant Psychiatrist specialising in Learning Disability Psychiatry to join the Community Adult Learning Disability Service on the Isle of Wight.

The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership, specialist psychiatric expertise, and strategic guidance to a multidisciplinary team supporting adults with learning disabilities and associated mental health needs.

This role offers the chance to contribute to the development of services within a newly formed integrated healthcare organisation while ensuring the delivery of safe, compassionate, and high-quality patient care.

About the Service

The Community Adult Learning Disability Team is a fully multidisciplinary service providing specialist support to adults with learning disabilities across the Isle of Wight.

The team currently includes professionals from several clinical disciplines, such as:

  • Clinical psychology
  • Specialist nursing
  • Occupational therapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Art therapy (new role currently being introduced)

The service works collaboratively with experts by experience, carers, and partner organisations across the wider healthcare system. There are also plans to establish a dedicated Intensive Support Team, which will further enhance the range of services available to patients and families.

Key Responsibilities

The Consultant Psychiatrist will play a central role in delivering high-quality clinical care and guiding the multidisciplinary team.

Clinical Leadership

  • Provide senior clinical leadership within the Adult Learning Disability Service.
  • Support the multidisciplinary team in delivering safe, effective, and person-centred care.
  • Ensure professional standards and responsibilities are clearly understood by all team members.

Team Collaboration and Communication

  • Promote open communication between professionals within the team and across partner services.
  • Ensure that relevant clinical information is shared promptly to support coordinated patient care.
  • Encourage active participation from all team members during clinical discussions and service planning.

Patient Care Coordination

  • Oversee the development of coordinated care plans for individuals with learning disabilities and complex needs.
  • Ensure patients and carers are informed about their care pathways and know who to contact for support.

Risk Management and Governance

  • Implement systems to identify, assess, and manage clinical risks within the service.
  • Maintain high standards of patient safety and clinical governance.
  • Encourage transparent reporting and discussion of clinical issues.

Professional Support and Development

  • Provide supervision and mentoring to healthcare professionals within the service.
  • Encourage continuous learning and improvement among team members.

Salary and Employment Details

  • Pay Scheme: Hospital Medical and Dental – Consultant Grade
  • Salary Range: £109,725 – £145,478 annually
  • Contract: Permanent
  • Working Pattern: Part-time with flexible working options

Essential Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council with a licence to practise.
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or an equivalent recognised qualification.

Completion of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Learning Disability Psychiatry or eligibility for inclusion in the Specialist Register within six months of the interview date.

DBS and Background Checks

This position requires an enhanced criminal record check through the Disclosure and Barring Service because the role involves working with vulnerable adults.
