Lead High-Quality Inpatient Care for Older Adults

We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Consultant Psychiatrist in Older Persons Mental Health to join the inpatient OPMH service based at Gosport War Memorial Hospital.

This role offers the opportunity to provide senior clinical leadership across the wards while delivering specialist assessment and treatment for older adults with complex mental health needs. The successful candidate will hold Responsible Clinician (RC) duties and play a key role in shaping safe, person-centred inpatient care.

The Service and Team

You will join the Older Persons Mental Health inpatient team working across two ward areas at Gosport War Memorial Hospital.

The multidisciplinary team includes:

  • A part-time Consultant Psychiatrist
  • Middle-grade doctor
  • Three resident doctors
  • Experienced nursing, therapy, psychology, and social care colleagues
  • This collaborative structure ensures safe decision-making, strong peer support, and continuity of care.

Your Role

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive psychiatric assessment and treatment for older adults
  • Undertake Responsible Clinician duties across Rose Ward and associated wards
  • Lead care planning and risk management
  • Support safe discharge pathways and continuity with community services

Clinical Leadership

  • Offer senior oversight to the multidisciplinary team
  • Guide complex decision-making and case formulation
  • Promote a culture of openness, safety, and reflective practice

Service Development and Governance

  • Participate fully in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement
  • Contribute to service planning and future development
  • Support teaching, training, and local academic activity
  • Working as Part of a High-Performing Team

Consultants in this service are expected to:

  • Ensure clarity around professional roles and responsibilities
  • Promote shared accountability for patient safety
  • Encourage open discussion of challenges and learning
  • Maintain clear, timely communication within and across teams
  • Support inclusive decision-making and collaborative leadership

Legal and Professional Responsibilities

You will be expected to practise in line with UK statutory and professional frameworks, including:

  1. Mental Health Act responsibilities, including Section 12 approval
  2. Safeguarding and patient safety standards
  3. Medical professionalism and Good Medical Practice

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • Full General Medical Council (GMC) registration
  • MRCPsych or recognised equivalent
  • CCT in Older Persons Psychiatry (or within 6 months of interview)
  • Eligibility for inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register
  • Information on joining the Specialist Register
  • Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act
