Role Overview

East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced and motivated Dietitian with a strong interest in paediatric diabetes to join its specialist children’s diabetes service.

This is a rewarding opportunity to support babies, children and young people (BCYP) living with diabetes while working closely with their families and carers. The successful candidate will provide expert nutritional guidance, help improve long-term health outcomes, and contribute to the continued development of a large and well-established regional service.

About the Service

The Trust hosts one of the largest paediatric diabetes services within the South East Coast and London network. Most patients are living with Type 1 diabetes, and a high proportion are supported through modern technologies such as insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring systems.

The team is currently focused on service improvement and innovation, offering staff the chance to build advanced skills while contributing to better care pathways for children and young people.

Care is delivered across hospital, community, and home environments, with strong links to schools and local support services.

Core Responsibilities

Specialist Clinical Practice

  • Manage a defined caseload of children and young people with diabetes
  • Provide advanced dietetic assessment, care planning, and ongoing review
  • Use clinical judgement to guide individualised nutritional interventions
  • Support patients using insulin therapy, pump technology, and glucose monitoring systems
  • Ensure safeguarding standards for children are followed at all times

Leadership and Service Development

  • Provide professional leadership to a small team of Band 5 and 6 Paediatric Diabetes Dietitians
  • Contribute to service audits, quality improvement, and clinical governance
  • Participate in multidisciplinary reviews aligned with national diabetes standards
  • Support the development of pathways that improve patient experience and outcomes

Education and Partnership Working

  • Deliver specialist education to families, schools, and healthcare professionals
  • Provide training and advice to colleagues across hospital and community settings
  • Work collaboratively with wider health, social care, and voluntary sector partners
  • Take part in the out-of-hours telephone support service for families (pro-rata)

Working Environment

This post involves cross-site working across East Kent, including children’s wards and specialist diabetes clinics in multiple localities. While much of the role is hospital-based, there will also be opportunities to engage with patients in community settings to strengthen continuity of care.

You will be supported by a dedicated multidisciplinary team committed to professional development and evidence-based practice.

Professional Requirements

  • Degree or postgraduate qualification in Dietetics
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Advanced knowledge of paediatric diabetes management
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary healthcare teams
  • Ability to lead, supervise, and support junior staff
