Overview of the Role
We are seeking an experienced Consultant in Older Persons Mental Health (OPMH) to join our inpatient team at Gosport War Memorial Hospital (GWM). This role offers an exceptional opportunity to provide clinical leadership, governance, and direct patient care across the OPMH wards, ensuring patients receive safe, high-quality, and evidence-based treatment.
The post holder will work collaboratively alongside a part-time consultant, resident doctors, and a middle-grade doctor, providing RC responsibilities, clinical oversight, and mentorship to the multidisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities
- Clinical Leadership: Provide direct patient care and oversight across OPMH wards, acting as Responsible Consultant (RC) for allocated patients.
- Team Supervision: Mentor, support, and supervise junior doctors and multidisciplinary team members, promoting professional development and high standards of care.
- Service Governance: Participate actively in clinical governance, risk management, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Integrated Care: Collaborate across wards and with community services to ensure seamless patient pathways.
- Communication & Collaboration: Ensure effective communication within the team and with external stakeholders, maintaining transparency in decision-making and patient care planning.
- Teaching & Training: Contribute to local academic meetings, training programs, and teaching opportunities for junior clinicians and students.

Person Specification
Qualifications – Essential:
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- MRCPsych or recognised equivalent
- CCT in Older Persons Psychiatry (or eligible within 6 months at the time of interview)
- Approved under section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983
Experience:
- Expertise in managing older adults with complex psychiatric and medical needs in inpatient settings.
- Demonstrated leadership in multidisciplinary teams and ability to provide clinical supervision.
- Commitment to high standards of governance, risk management, and patient safety.
Desirable:
- Involvement in academic or research activities.
- Experience with integrated care models linking inpatient and community mental health services.
