Position Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry to join a dynamic Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) on the Isle of Wight. This position is ideal for an experienced psychiatrist who is passionate about delivering high-quality care while contributing to the ongoing transformation of mental health services within the Trust.

The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership, specialist psychiatric expertise, and strategic oversight across community mental health services. The role may involve collaboration with inpatient services, early intervention teams, crisis resolution services, and recovery-focused community care.

Recruitment Incentive – £30,000 Golden Hello

To attract exceptional professionals, the Trust offers a £30,000 Golden Hello incentive to eligible candidates appointed to this role. The payment will be made in four instalments over two years, subject to applicable terms and conditions.

Key Responsibilities

The Consultant Psychiatrist will play a central role in delivering specialist mental health care while supporting multidisciplinary teams.

Clinical Leadership

  • Provide senior clinical oversight to multidisciplinary teams delivering community mental health services.
  • Ensure treatment and care plans follow evidence-based psychiatric practice.
  • Support recovery-oriented approaches that promote independence and wellbeing.

Patient Assessment and Complex Case Management

  • Manage a focused caseload consisting primarily of individuals presenting with complex and severe mental health conditions.
  • Perform detailed psychiatric assessments using a biopsychosocial formulation model.
  • Develop personalised treatment plans addressing both clinical and social care needs.

Risk Assessment and Safeguarding

  • Evaluate complex clinical and safeguarding risks to ensure patient safety.
  • Provide guidance to team members on risk management strategies.
  • Maintain compliance with safeguarding policies and clinical governance frameworks.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration

  • Work closely with psychologists, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Support effective communication between community teams, inpatient units, and carers.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, including triage and consultant supervision sessions.

Education and Supervision

  • Provide clinical supervision, mentorship, and teaching to junior doctors and members of the care team.
  • Promote professional development and knowledge sharing within the service.

Candidate Requirements

Applicants must meet the following professional qualifications and regulatory requirements.

Essential Qualifications

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council with a licence to practise.
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or an equivalent recognised qualification.
  • Completion of CCT in General Adult Psychiatry, or eligibility for inclusion in the Specialist Register within six months of interview.
  • Approval under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983.
  • Guidance on the Mental Health Act and its professional responsibilities

DBS and Background Screening

This role requires an enhanced criminal record check through the Disclosure and Barring Service due to working with vulnerable adults.
