Job Description

About Us

The UCL Dementia Research Centre (DRC), based in the Department of Neurodegenerative Disease and led by Professor Nick Fox, is a world‑renowned clinical research hub focused on understanding the causes, progression and individual experience of dementia. Our mission is to transform scientific insight into improved care, support and outcomes for people affected by memory, cognitive and neurological conditions.

As part of this work, the DRC runs a specialist service called Rare Dementia Support (RDS) — a UCL‑led collaborative initiative offering tailored social, emotional and practical help to individuals living with, or affected by, rare forms of dementia. RDS brings together clinical expertise, community support and research‑informed guidance to improve understanding, resilience and quality of life.

Rare Dementia Support is funded by The National Brain Appeal and delivered in partnership with the Queen Square Institute of Neurology and National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

Role Overview

We are seeking an empathetic, knowledgeable and proactive Information, Knowledge & Support Adviser to join the Rare Dementia Support team. You will be at the forefront of delivering advice, guidance and emotional support to people living with rare dementias — including atypical, inherited and young‑onset forms — as well as to their carers, families, friends and relevant professionals.

This role combines direct support through telephone and in‑person contact at the Rare Dementia Support Centre with opportunities to help shape new programmes, improve service delivery and lead special projects aligned with the strategic direction of RDS and the wider Dementia Research Centre.

This is a hybrid role with the expectation that you will be on‑site or at agreed regional venues for approximately 60–80% of your working week. Flexibility to work occasional evenings or Saturdays is required, as many support groups and community activities take place outside standard hours.

Key Responsibilities

You will:

  • Provide high‑quality, person‑centred advice and support for people affected by rare dementia through phone, in‑person and digital channels.
  • Build trusting relationships with service users who may be dealing with cognitive challenges, psychological vulnerability or emotional distress.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of support groups, professional training, and patient and public involvement (PPI/E) activities.
  • Support outreach initiatives and help shape new programmes based on feedback and emerging need.
  • Maintain accurate records and share learning to improve service impact.

Who We’re Looking For

You will have:

Essential Qualifications & Experience

An Honours degree (or equivalent) in a health, social care or related discipline.
Demonstrated experience delivering support before, during and after diagnosis in dementia or related long‑term conditions.
Deep knowledge of rare dementias (atypical, inherited, young‑onset) and the support landscape in the UK.
Current understanding of health and social care frameworks that support neurological and cognitive conditions (including statutory, voluntary and community resources).
Strong interpersonal and communication skills — especially in conveying sensitive information with empathy and clarity.

Understanding the UK health and social care system helps ensure safe and effective support for people living with complex conditions:
