Overview of the Role

An exciting opportunity is available for a Clinical Fellow in Acute Medicine with a dedicated focus on Medical Education. This 12-month role is ideal for doctors who have completed their Foundation training (FY2 or equivalent) and are interested in developing both acute clinical expertise and teaching skills within a dynamic London teaching hospital.

The successful candidate will join the Acute Medicine team, working closely with experienced physicians and multidisciplinary staff in the management of acutely unwell patients. In addition to clinical responsibilities, the fellow will contribute significantly to medical education initiatives, including simulation-based teaching and structured training sessions.

Working at Homerton Hospital offers exposure to a diverse patient population, enabling doctors to gain valuable experience in managing a wide range of acute medical conditions across inpatient and ambulatory care settings.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

The Clinical Fellow will contribute to the delivery of acute medical care across the hospital, including:

• Providing SHO-level care for patients admitted through emergency pathways
• Supporting the Acute Care Unit (ACU) alongside registrars and consultants
• Participating in the Hospital at Night team as the Deteriorating Patient SHO
• Reviewing and managing acutely unwell medical and surgical patients
• Taking part in shift patterns that may include twilight admissions and night shifts
• Contributing to ward rounds, clinical decision-making, and patient management planning

Medical Education Responsibilities

A protected portion of the role is dedicated to education and training.

The fellow will:

• Complete a Train-the-Trainer programme
• Help design and deliver in-situ simulation training within Acute Medicine
• Develop and run teaching programmes for junior doctors and medical students
• Work collaboratively with the Medical Education Department to enhance training opportunities
• Support educational innovation across the acute care pathway

Professional Development Opportunities

The post encourages development beyond clinical service. Fellows will be supported to pursue additional activities such as:

• Quality improvement initiatives
• Clinical informatics or digital health projects
• Procedural skill development
• Experience in specialist clinics, theatres, or critical care

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

Applicants must have:

• MBBS, MBChB, or equivalent medical degree
• Full registration with the General Medical Council
• Completion of Foundation Year 1 and 2 training or equivalent
• Eligibility to work in the UK, including visa requirements where applicable

Desirable Qualifications

Additional qualifications that may strengthen an application include:

• Completion of Core Medical Training (CMT) or equivalent
• MRCP Part 1
• MRCEM Part A
• FRCPath Part 1

Postgraduate qualifications such as Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene or MSc in Microbiology

Clinical Experience

Applicants should demonstrate:

• At least 6 months of experience in General or Acute Medicine at FY2 level
• Experience participating in acute or unselected medical admissions
• Exposure to general surgical specialties during Foundation training
• Strong clinical judgement and evidence-based decision-making

Desirable experience includes:

• Emergency Medicine, Acute Medicine, or Ambulatory Care
• Intensive Care or Infection/Microbiology related work
• NHS clinical experience of two years or more
