About the Role

University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced pharmacist to take on the newly created position of Lead Advanced Pharmacist for Women’s Services. This senior role has been developed to strengthen pharmacy leadership and improve medicines governance across maternity, gynaecology, maternal medicine and neonatal services within the Trust.

The successful candidate will provide advanced clinical expertise and independent prescribing support across multiple hospital sites. They will help ensure that medicines used during pregnancy, the postnatal period, breastfeeding and neonatal care are prescribed safely and effectively while aligning with national healthcare standards and Trust priorities.

This is an excellent opportunity for a senior pharmacist who is passionate about improving medicines optimisation and shaping specialist services in a large NHS organisation.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership

  • Provide specialist pharmacy leadership across maternity, gynaecology, maternal medicine and neonatal interfaces.
  • Act as the Trust’s expert adviser on medicines used in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Deliver advanced clinical pharmacy input across multiple hospital sites to ensure consistent service provision.

Independent Prescribing

  • Prescribe and optimise medicines within scope of practice as an independent prescriber.
  • Manage high-risk, specialist and unlicensed medicines where clinically appropriate.
  • Support safe prescribing for women, pregnant individuals and newborn infants.

Medicines Governance

  • Lead medicines governance activities including prescribing review, medicines reconciliation and incident investigation.
  • Develop and implement policies, protocols and treatment guidelines aligned with national healthcare standards.
  • Monitor prescribing practices and promote safe medication use across Women’s Services.

Quality Improvement

  • Use prescribing data and incident reporting systems to drive continuous improvement.
  • Lead clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives across the service.
  • Promote standardised pharmacy practices across Trust hospital sites.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration

  • Work closely with obstetricians, gynaecologists, midwives, anaesthetists, neonatologists and specialist nurses.
  • Provide expert pharmaceutical advice within multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Collaborate with community healthcare providers and regional maternity networks.

Workforce Development

  • Support training and professional development for pharmacy staff working within Women’s Services.
  • Provide mentoring and supervision to pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
  • Contribute to workforce planning and service resilience.

Essential Requirements

Professional Registration

  • Registration as a pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Qualifications and Training
  • Postgraduate clinical training at diploma level or above
  • Independent prescribing qualification (NMP)
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development

Experience

  • Significant experience working in acute hospital pharmacy
  • Knowledge and experience of medicines used in pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Experience supporting multidisciplinary teams within hospital settings

Desirable Experience

  • Experience in women’s health or maternity pharmacy services
  • Participation in clinical audit, research or guideline development
  • Membership of relevant professional groups such as the Neonatal and Paediatric Pharmacists Group
  • Experience developing clinical protocols or contributing to formulary decisions
