About the Role

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated Consultant Psychiatrist to join the multidisciplinary team at Rowan Ward 2, a 15-bed adult inpatient mental health ward located at the Summerlands Hospital site in Yeovil.

This position offers the opportunity to provide clinical leadership within an established inpatient service, supporting adults with complex mental health conditions. The successful candidate will work alongside an experienced team of healthcare professionals while helping to shape high-quality patient care and service development.

As the Responsible Clinician, you will oversee patient care for individuals admitted to the ward, managing complex assessments, coordinating treatment plans, and ensuring safe and effective care delivery.

You will also collaborate with community services, specialist teams, and inpatient units across the Trust to support continuity of care and safe discharge planning.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership

Provide clinical leadership for Rowan Ward 2, ensuring high standards of care across the inpatient service.

Patient Assessment and Care Planning

Assess and manage patients with complex mental health needs, developing evidence-based treatment plans and reviewing medication where required.

Responsible Clinician Duties

Act as the Responsible Clinician for ward patients, fulfilling responsibilities under the Mental Health Act and preparing tribunal reports when necessary.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration

Work closely with a multidisciplinary team that includes:

  • Registered Mental Health Nurses (RMNs)
  • Healthcare Assistants (HCAs)
  • Psychologists
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Junior Doctors and Trainees
  • Administrative staff
  • Ward Management
  • Lead ward rounds, coordinate multidisciplinary meetings, and oversee care planning for inpatients.

Teaching and Supervision

  • Provide mentorship and clinical supervision to trainees and other members of the clinical team.

Service Development

  • Support quality improvement initiatives and contribute to the ongoing development of inpatient mental health services within the Trust.

On-Call Participation

  • Optional participation in the 1:11 senior on-call rota, covering inpatient wards and places of safety across the service.

Essential Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Medical degree recognised for practice in the UK
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council with a licence to practise
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in the relevant specialty
  • Significant postgraduate experience in mental health settings
  • Strong knowledge of psychiatric theory and clinical practice (MRCPsych or working towards)
