About the School
Established in 1915, the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies is one of the UK’s leading centres for scholarship on Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern Europe, the Baltic region, and Russia. The School combines disciplinary depth with comparative and global perspectives, supporting research and teaching that bridges languages, cultures, and histories.
Within its Languages and Culture strand, literary studies are approached through interdisciplinary dialogue — connecting textual analysis with cultural, historical, and social frameworks.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Lecturer specialising in Czech and comparative literature to join the School on a permanent basis from September 2026. The role blends research leadership with high-quality teaching and academic service.
Key responsibilities include:
- Research & Scholarly Contribution
- Developing an original, internationally visible research profile
- Publishing work that advances Czech and Central/Eastern European literary studies
- Participating in knowledge exchange and collaborative projects
Teaching & Supervision
- Designing and delivering undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
- Supervising dissertations and supporting doctoral training
- Providing assessment and constructive feedback
Academic Engagement
- Contributing to curriculum development
- Participating in departmental administration
- Supporting student academic and pastoral needs
- This post is eligible for UK visa sponsorship subject to immigration criteria.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for a scholar with strong linguistic expertise and a clear comparative outlook.
You should demonstrate:
- A PhD in Czech literature or a closely related field
- Postdoctoral research development and a growing publication record
- Advanced knowledge of Czech language and literary traditions
- Expertise in at least one additional regional language/literature
- Experience in comparative literary analysis
- Teaching capability across undergraduate and postgraduate levels
- Strong communication, organisational, and digital teaching skills
