Job Overview
This is an excellent opportunity to join an innovative Mental Health Support Team (MHST), locally known as the Peace of Mind Team, delivering early intervention and prevention-focused mental health services to children and young people.
The role supports the UK government’s initiative to expand access to mental health services in educational settings. You will work directly with schools and colleges across South Durham, helping to improve emotional wellbeing and resilience among students.
Key Responsibilities
The EMHP role is structured around three core functions:
1. Whole-School/College Approach to Wellbeing
- Support development and implementation of mental health policies
Deliver training, workshops, and awareness campaigns
Contribute to PHSE curriculum and wellbeing initiatives
2. Consultation and Advice for Education Staff
- Provide guidance to teachers and school staff
Build staff confidence in managing student mental health needs
Offer both formal and informal consultation
3. Direct Clinical Work with Young People
- Conduct assessments and deliver low-intensity interventions
Use evidence-based approaches, primarily Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Manage a caseload of young people with mild to moderate mental health needs

Essential Qualifications
- Completion of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education Mental Health Practice (EMHP)
Accreditation via a British Psychological Society (BPS) or British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) approved programme
Current professional registration with a relevant body
Experience & Skills
- Experience working with children and young people experiencing emotional or mental health difficulties
Delivery of low-intensity CBT interventions
Experience working within educational settings
Strong communication and report-writing skills
Ability to manage workload and caseload independently
Competence in risk assessment and safeguarding
Ability to build effective therapeutic relationships
