A Meaningful Consultant Role in Community Psychiatry

This is an excellent opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join a well-established Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) serving South Somerset. You’ll become part of a collaborative group of consultants supporting Yeovil and surrounding areas, with a strong infrastructure already in place.

The role focuses on delivering high-quality, patient-centred psychiatric care within the community, while contributing to service development in a progressive and supportive NHS Trust.

 Your Role and Impact

As a Consultant Psychiatrist, you will:

  • Lead on the assessment and management of complex mental health cases
    Provide expert input for patients with severe mental illness (SMI) and comorbidities
    Manage referrals from primary care via a structured single point of access
    Conduct outpatient and joint multidisciplinary assessments
    Supervise medication plans, including complex prescribing cases
    Support ADHD assessments where additional complexities exist
    Contribute to multidisciplinary decision-making and leadership

You will primarily support the Yeovil West CMHT, covering a defined GP population in line with best practice standards.

 Working Pattern & On-Call

  • Monday to Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm
    1 in 11 on-call rota
    Weekdays: 5:00pm – 9:00am
    Weekends: Saturday 9:00am – Monday 9:00am

Optional participation in senior out-of-hours cover is available, depending on preference and service needs.

 A Collaborative Care Model

You’ll be part of a multidisciplinary environment working alongside:

  • Psychologists, therapists, and social workers
    Mental health nurses and occupational therapists
    Specialist teams including Early Psychosis and Home Treatment services

  • Assertive Outreach for high-risk, complex patients
    Transition services for young adults (Connect 18)
    Open Mental Health (OMH), a forward-thinking, integrated community service

 Facilities & Base

Your base will be at Magnolia House, located within the Summerlands Hospital site in Yeovil.

There are no direct inpatient responsibilities, although on-call duties may involve providing senior clinical oversight across inpatient services when required.
