The University of Reading is home to some of the UK’s most distinctive and picturesque campuses, including Whiteknights, London Road, and Greenlands in Henley-on-Thames. Together, they create a unique “University within a Park” setting.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Deputy Head of Grounds Maintenance to play a key role in maintaining and enhancing these exceptional outdoor spaces. Based primarily at the award-winning Whiteknights campus, you will help ensure that the University’s landscapes continue to meet high environmental and aesthetic standards.
Your Role in the Team
This position is ideal for someone who combines operational expertise with strong leadership skills. You will support the strategic and day-to-day management of grounds maintenance services across multiple sites.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Operational Oversight: Coordinating maintenance activities across campus landscapes and ensuring consistent quality standards
Team Leadership: Supervising in-house staff, contractors, and volunteers to deliver efficient and effective services
Resource Management: Allocating staff, equipment, and materials to meet service demands and performance targets
Health & Safety: Embedding safe working practices and ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations
Stakeholder Engagement: Working collaboratively with internal teams and external partners to maintain a high-quality environment
You will also contribute to the care and development of the Harris Garden, supported by a dedicated volunteer community.
What We’re Looking For
We are seeking a proactive and motivated professional who can lead with confidence and bring fresh thinking to grounds management.
You should demonstrate:
- Proven experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, or estate management
Strong leadership and team coordination skills
Knowledge of health and safety practices in operational environments
Ability to manage workloads, priorities, and performance targets effectively
Good communication and customer service skills
Experience working in a multi-stakeholder environment
Experience within a university or large estate setting would be beneficial, but not essential.
