The Opportunity

The Institute of Education (IoE) at the University of Reading is seeking a Lecturer and Programme Director to lead the PGCE Early Years programme. This is a key academic leadership role focused on shaping high-quality teacher education for the early years sector.

The IoE is one of the largest providers of teacher training in the South-East of England, preparing over 400 teachers annually and working in partnership with more than 400 schools. Its programmes combine academic research, practical experience, and professional development to prepare graduates for impactful careers in education.

As Programme Director, you will take overall responsibility for the design, delivery, and continuous improvement of the PGCE Early Years course, ensuring it meets professional, academic, and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

Lead the planning, delivery, and ongoing development of the PGCE Early Years programme
Act as a subject specialist in early childhood education (birth to age 5)
Ensure programme quality, including compliance with Ofsted requirements
Build and maintain relationships with external stakeholders, including sector bodies and partners
Support recruitment activities in collaboration with admissions and marketing teams
Contribute to inspection preparation and continuous improvement planning
Play an active role in the Initial Teacher Education (ITE) leadership structure
Engage in research, scholarship, or professional practice within the field

About You

You will be an experienced educator and academic with a strong commitment to early years education and teacher training.

You should have:

A relevant degree and teaching qualification
Experience in Initial Teacher Education (ITE) or early years provision
Strong leadership and organisational skills
Knowledge of curriculum design and quality assurance processes
The ability to work collaboratively across academic and professional teams

You will also demonstrate:

A clear understanding of current developments in early years education
Strong communication skills and the ability to engage a range of stakeholders
A commitment to inclusive practice and student success

This role involves working in a regulated educational environment and is subject to safeguarding requirements.

A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be required
The role may be exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974
