Overview

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is inviting applications for a Consultant Obstetrician specialising in Maternal Medicine and Fetal Care to join the team at Musgrove Park Hospital.

This newly created role strengthens the Trust’s high-risk obstetrics service and supports the development of a dedicated elective caesarean section pathway. The successful candidate will play a key role in providing specialist obstetric care while contributing to clinical leadership and service improvement across two hospital sites.

The post focuses entirely on obstetrics, with no gynaecology commitments, allowing the consultant to concentrate on complex pregnancies, maternal medicine, and fetal surveillance.

The job plan consists of 10 Programmed Activities with an 8.5:1.5 split between Direct Clinical Care and Supporting Professional Activities, alongside participation in an obstetric-only on-call rota (approximately 1:12).

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care

  • Deliver specialist obstetric care in inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings.
  • Manage high-risk pregnancies, including cases involving maternal medical conditions.
  • Perform fetal growth scans and Doppler assessments for suspected growth-restricted or small-for-gestational-age babies.
  • Lead twice-daily consultant ward rounds during on-call periods.

Specialist Clinics

The consultant will contribute to the development and delivery of specialist antenatal services, including:

Weekly fetal growth scanning clinic

Fortnightly high-risk antenatal clinic, which may focus on areas such as:

  • Pre-term birth prevention
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Maternal medicine conditions
  • Epilepsy in pregnancy
  • Leadership and Service Development
  • Act as Obstetric Fetal Monitoring Lead across Musgrove Park and Yeovil District Hospitals.
  • Support staff training, compliance monitoring, and quality improvement initiatives related to fetal monitoring.
  • Participate in the Trust’s governance framework through audit, service evaluation, and clinical improvement programmes.

Teaching and Supervision

  • Provide clinical supervision for junior doctors and trainees.
  • Contribute to postgraduate education, training programmes, and performance appraisal.
  • Support research projects and national clinical studies where possible.

Essential Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Specialist registration in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (or eligibility within 6 months)
  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree
  • MRCOG or equivalent specialist qualification
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent in Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Additional essential skills include:

  • Extensive clinical experience in obstetrics
  • Expertise in high-risk pregnancy management
  • Competence in fetal growth scanning and Doppler ultrasound assessment
  • Ability to work independently within a multidisciplinary team

Desirable Qualifications

The Trust would also welcome applicants who have:

  • A postgraduate degree such as MSc or equivalent
  • Special Interest Training in Maternal Medicine (SITIM) or fetal medicine
  • A recognised qualification in medical education
  • Experience in labour ward leadership
