Job Description

Shape the Future of Dermatology Pharmacy

Are you an experienced clinical pharmacist ready to step into a highly specialist, patient-facing role? We are looking for an Advanced Clinical Pharmacist to join our dermatology service and lead on medicines optimisation for patients receiving systemic, biologic and targeted therapies.

This is more than a prescribing role — it is an opportunity to influence pathways, improve patient outcomes, and ensure responsible stewardship of high-cost medicines in a dynamic university teaching hospital environment.

Your Impact in This Role

You will provide expert pharmaceutical care to patients receiving therapies such as biologics, JAK inhibitors and isotretinoin. Working closely with dermatology consultants, specialist nurses, commissioners and homecare providers, you will ensure treatments are safe, evidence-based and aligned with commissioning frameworks.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Specialist Clinical Practice

  • Run pharmacist-led dermatology clinics within your scope of practice
  • Assess, prescribe and review systemic and biologic therapies
  • Interpret blood results and clinical monitoring parameters
  • Deliver structured counselling on treatment risks, vaccinations, fertility considerations and lifestyle advice

High-Cost Medicines Governance

  • Screen and approve homecare prescriptions
  • Ensure compliance with National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Technology Appraisals
  • Manage Blueteq submissions and commissioning criteria
  • Monitor expenditure, support biosimilar switching and contribute to KPI reporting

Service Development & Quality

  • Support pathway standardisation and service redesign
  • Contribute to audit, incident review and quality improvement initiatives
  • Provide medicines optimisation advice to clinicians and commissioners

Education & Leadership

  • Mentor pharmacists, technicians and trainees
  • Deliver teaching sessions within the multidisciplinary team
  • Promote safe prescribing practices and shared learning
  • Participation in Trust rotas (including occasional weekend or bank holiday cover) will be required.

What We’re Looking For

Essential Criteria

  • Registered pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Postgraduate Diploma (or equivalent advanced clinical experience)
  • Significant post-registration clinical pharmacy experience
  • Independent Prescriber qualification (or commitment to achieve within 12–18 months)
  • Demonstrated understanding of NICE guidance and high-cost drug governance
  • Strong clinical reasoning, organisational skills and compassionate communication
  • Experience contributing to audit or quality improvement

Desirable Experience

  • Dermatology, immunology or biologics pathway expertise
  • Experience with biosimilar switching or formulary development
  • Teaching, mentoring or supervisory experience
  • Business case or service development involvement
