Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a motivated and forward-thinking Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a specialist interest in Urogynaecology.

This is an opportunity to join a well-established, supportive department delivering comprehensive obstetric and gynaecological services, while helping to further develop a growing urogynaecology service aligned with national standards and best practice.

You will join a team of 12 consultants within a collaborative, inclusive environment that values clinical excellence, innovation and compassionate care.

The Role in Practice

Core Obstetrics & Gynaecology Responsibilities

You will:

  • Deliver high-quality obstetric and gynaecological care across inpatient, outpatient and emergency settings
  • Participate in a 1:12 non-residential on-call rota
  • Lead twice-daily consultant-led labour ward rounds when on call
  • Contribute to antenatal clinics, elective and emergency theatre lists, day surgery, ambulatory gynaecology services and elective caesarean sections
  • Support obstetric triage and acute gynaecology services
  • Supervise and mentor junior doctors and postgraduate trainees
  • Contribute to governance, audit and service improvement initiatives
  • Consultants are expected to actively support trainee wellbeing, professional development and structured appraisal processes.
  • Specialist Focus: Urogynaecology
  • You will work within an established pelvic floor service comprising:
  • Two consultants with a specialist interest

Associate specialist

  • Urogynaecology specialist nurse
  • Clinical nurse practitioner
  • Monthly multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting

Your specialist responsibilities will include:

  • Assessment and management of pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence
  • Leading dedicated urogynaecology clinics, including pessary management and complex prolapse care
  • Performing pelvic floor and continence surgery in accordance with Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and British Society of Urogynaecology standards
  • Supporting mesh surveillance and complication pathways aligned with National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommendations
  • Contributing to new models of care such as day-case pelvic floor pathways and enhanced recovery programmes

What We’re Looking For

Essential Qualifications

  • Recognised medical degree with Royal College membership (or equivalent)
  • Full registration with licence to practise from the General Medical Council
  • GMC registration guidance
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Obstetrics & Gynaecology via CCT, CESR or European Community Rights (or within 6 months of interview)

Essential Experience

  • Comprehensive clinical experience across obstetrics and gynaecology
  • Advanced training in urogynaecology (ATSM, SITM or recognised subspecialty training)
  • Competence in pelvic floor assessment and surgery
  • Ability to work independently and lead clinical service development
  • Experience in elective and emergency care

Desirable Attributes

  • Higher degree (MD, PhD, MSc or equivalent)
  • Educational supervision qualification
  • Experience in research or peer-reviewed publication
  • Involvement in guideline implementation or service redesign
  • Experience with BSUG database participation and mesh complication pathways
