Job Description

Role overview

This is a replacement consultant post within an established community adult mental health service delivering secondary care to working-age adults. The Sedgefield Treatment & Intervention Team supports people experiencing a wide range of complex mental health conditions — including mood disorders, psychosis, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, ADHD and autism — through coordinated, evidence-based and compassionate care.

Referrals typically arrive via GP practices, crisis pathways and liaison services. The consultant will play a central leadership role in ensuring safe assessment, effective treatment planning and collaborative working with crisis and inpatient services. When hospital care is required, pathways link closely with West Park Hospital and nearby crisis teams.

The post holder joins a multidisciplinary environment focused on continuity of care, recovery-oriented practice and service improvement. Clinics are mainly delivered at Enterprise House, with additional outreach work — including community visits — when clinically appropriate.

Service context

The team operates within a Primary Care Network covering ten GP practices, strengthening integration between primary and specialist care. Specialist trust-wide services — such as ADHD, autism assessment and eating disorder teams — are available for consultation and shared care planning.

The consultant is expected to build strong professional relationships across community, crisis and inpatient pathways to support seamless patient transitions and risk management.

Core responsibilities

Clinical leadership

  • Provide senior psychiatric expertise for new assessments and ongoing care.
  • Lead diagnostic formulation, psychopharmacology planning and complex risk management.
  • Support multidisciplinary decision-making and personalised care planning.

Integrated working

  • Participate in formulation and transfer meetings to maintain continuity.

Education & supervision

  • Provide supervision to junior doctors and non-medical prescribers.
  • Contribute to team learning, audit and service improvement initiatives.

Working environment
