Overview

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Consultant in Older Persons Mental Health to join our multidisciplinary team. This substantive consultant role focuses on delivering high-quality community-based mental health services for older adults — particularly those with complex functional mental health presentations and memory difficulties, including dementia.

About the Role

As a Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist, you will provide expert clinical leadership and deliver patient-centred care across the community mental health services for older adults. You will:

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Lead comprehensive assessments and management for older adults with complex functional mental health conditions and memory problems, including dementia.
  • Support multidisciplinary teams in the delivery of evidence-based mental healthcare across community services.
  • Provide senior clinical supervision, including complex risk and psychiatric assessments.
  • Deliver statutory clinical reports and therapeutic recommendations when required.

Service Development & Leadership

Work with the Lead Consultant Psychiatrist for Older Persons Mental Health to develop and implement clinical pathways — particularly for functional mental disorders and memory services.

  • Promote integrated and multi-agency care across mental health, social care, community services and primary care.
  • Support and uphold best practice standards using evidence-based care and clinical governance frameworks.

Legal & Clinical Duties

Undertake Section 12(2) Approved Clinician duties under the Mental Health Act 1983, practising within current statutory guidance.

Qualifications & Person Specification

Essential Professional Requirements

  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise
  • MRCPsych or equivalent psychiatric qualification.
  • Section 12 Approval (recognition to perform Mental Health Act assessments).

  • Approved Clinician status under the Mental Health Act.
  • Demonstrated experience working with older adults — including dementia and functional mental health conditions.

Desirable Attributes

  • Senior leadership and service development experience.
  • Evidence of involvement in quality improvement, audit, teaching and research.
  • Experience working with multi-agency teams including social care, therapy services and primary care.

Professional Registration & Checks

  • This role requires an enhanced DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service) under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
