About the Role

Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) invites applications for the position of Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of Oncology, with an honorary consultant appointment at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSFT). The level of appointment will depend on the candidate’s experience and academic standing.

The successful candidate will:

  • Lead and develop a programme of clinical and academic oncology research, with a strong emphasis on clinical trials.
  • Provide strategic and clinical leadership as Clinical Director of the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (CTU).
  • Work in partnership with the Sussex Cancer Centre, UHSFT, and the Health and Care Research Partnership to enhance cancer research and patient outcomes across the region.

This senior academic role includes responsibilities for teaching, research, and leadership at BSMS, with an expectation to secure external research funding and support the growth of oncology research capacity within Sussex. The postholder will also play a key role in establishing a clinical academic oncology group at BSMS and UHSFT, and contribute to the development of additional academic oncology posts in future.

About You

You will be an established or emerging leader in clinical or medical oncology with a strong record in clinical trials and oncology research.
Applicants must hold a CCT in Medical Oncology or Clinical Oncology (or equivalent) and be eligible for registration with the GMC.

Key expectations:

  • Lead an independent, high-impact research programme in oncology (clinical, translational, or population-based).
  • Provide leadership for the Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) (2 PAs allocated) and expand the regional cancer trials portfolio.
  • Support and mentor academic and clinical colleagues in developing research activity and income generation.
  • Contribute to teaching, curriculum development, and student mentorship in oncology for undergraduate (BM BS) and postgraduate programmes.
  • Strengthen partnerships across BSMS, the Universities of Sussex and Brighton, and NHS partners.
  • For appointment at Professorial level, you will demonstrate sustained excellence and national/international recognition in research, education, leadership, and innovation.
