Job Description

About Us

The Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases (CNMD) is one of the largest and most comprehensive neuromuscular centres in Europe, providing NHS care to over 5,000 patients annually. CNMD delivers a wide range of specialist clinics, including several nationally commissioned services, and is recognised as a UK centre of excellence for rare disease management, training, and research.

In 2024, the LifeArc and Muscular Dystrophy UK (MDUK)-funded Translational Rare Disease Centre to Treat Mitochondrial Diseases (LAC-TreatMito-UK) was launched. Its goal is to accelerate the translation of novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for mitochondrial disorders, connecting clinical expertise, patient groups, and research infrastructure across the UK.

About the Role

This Clinical Research Fellowship forms part of the LAC-TreatMito-UK programme and focuses on imaging in primary mitochondrial disorders (PMD). The fellow will gain specialist clinical experience in neuromuscular and mitochondrial diseases, while leading an imaging-based research project investigating disease severity, progression, and treatment response.

Key responsibilities include

  • Designing, conducting, and managing high-quality clinical research projects.
  • Collecting and analysing imaging and phenotypic data.
  • Writing and publishing scientific papers.
  • Attending and contributing to the weekly mitochondrial multidisciplinary team (MDT) and fortnightly complex genetics MDT meetings.
  • Participating in clinical care, including reviewing patients in mitochondrial clinics and obtaining research consent.

The postholder will be based within the NHS Highly Specialised Service (HSS) for Rare Mitochondrial Disorders and will receive an honorary contract with UCLH NHS Foundation Trust (subject to DBS clearance).

This fellowship is funded until 31 August 2029 in the first instance, with opportunities to register for a PhD at UCL and undertake further research training.
