Role Overview
Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) invites applications from experienced, practicing General Practitioners for a senior academic appointment at Associate Professor or Professor level. The successful candidate will join the Department of Primary Care & Public Health, contributing to academic leadership, strategic development, and high-impact research aligned with BSMS priorities.
This post bridges clinical practice and academia, with the expectation that the appointee will hold a 0.2 FTE clinical role within a local GP practice through an honorary contract with NHS England.
What You Will Do
Research Leadership
Lead an independent research programme aligned with BSMS strengths such as:
Global health, infection, and cancer research
Mental health
- Health inequalities, disease prevention, and coastal community health
- Support and mentor researchers across BSMS and collaborate through the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) Kent, Surrey & Sussex.
- Deliver research-led teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Teaching & Curriculum Development
- Enhance the quality and delivery of general practice teaching across all years of the BMBS curriculum.
- Lead initiatives supporting student engagement, including GP placements, SSCs, and 4th-year research projects.
- Strengthen partnerships with training networks and community practices.
Institutional Contribution
- Contribute to School governance, academic strategy, and leadership initiatives.
- For professorial appointment: demonstrate national/international impact in research, education, and institutional leadership.
Clinical Engagement
- Maintain active clinical practice (0.2 FTE) in a local GP setting.
About You
Essential Background
- A practicing GP with a strong academic track record.
- Significant research experience with evidence of leadership, publications, and funding.
- Demonstrated excellence in medical education and curriculum development.
- Ability to build partnerships across clinical, academic, and community settings.
Desirable Expertise
- Contributions to national or international research networks.
- Experience managing major research programmes or supervising doctoral students.
