provides evidence, training, and policy advice to support climate action and sustainable resource management worldwide, addressing urgent challenges in energy transitions and net-zero systems.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Principal Research Fellow to serve as Research Director for the UCL Centre for Net-Zero Market Design, established in July 2024 through philanthropic support. The Centre focuses on designing innovative electricity market structures to accelerate the transition to net-zero carbon systems, both in the UK and internationally.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and direct the Centre’s research agenda on electricity market design for net-zero systems.
- Conduct and oversee research on market approaches to low-carbon investment and system operation.
- Engage with the Centre’s Funders, Advisory Board, and UK policy stakeholders, including officials involved in energy market reform.
- Supervise and mentor research staff and early career researchers within the Centre.
- Contribute to academic teaching, including a Masters module on Electricity Systems and Markets.
- Support international comparative projects, e.g., EU and China electricity market reform initiatives.
- Reporting: Work closely with Professor Michael Grubb, Professor of Energy and Climate Change and Director of the Centre.
Candidate Profile
Essential Qualifications & Experience:
- PhD (or equivalent experience) in energy policy, electricity market design, energy systems, or related discipline.
- Proven experience managing research projects and leading multi-disciplinary research teams.
- Strong publication record in energy policy, market design, or system operation.
- Experience working with UK and European electricity markets, including commercial contract design or trading.
- Experience engaging with policymakers, contributing to advisory panels, or responding to calls for evidence.
Desirable Attributes:
- Knowledge of international electricity markets.
- Experience working on multi-funded projects with governmental and philanthropic stakeholders.
- Employment Details
- Start Date: 01 December 2025
- Initial Funding: Until 01 August 2027; further funding may be available.
- Hybrid working model with a combination of on-site and remote work.
- This role is eligible for Skilled Worker Visa sponsorship
for international applicants.
