About the Role

Brighton & Sussex Medical School seeks a practicing GP for a senior academic role as Associate Professor or Professor of General Practice. The successful candidate will enhance the Department of Primary Care & Public Health’s teaching and research portfolio and provide academic leadership in general practice education and research.

These positions are career-grade roles requiring demonstrated leadership in research, teaching, and strategic academic planning, contributing to both departmental and institutional priorities.

Key Responsibilities

Lead an independent research programme aligned with BSMS strengths such as global health/infection, cancer, mental health, and cross-cutting themes like health inequalities, population health, and coastal community health.

Contribute to research leadership, supporting colleagues in engaging with primary care research, including collaboration across NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) regions in Kent, Surrey & Sussex.

Deliver and develop teaching in general practice across the undergraduate BMBS curriculum, including placements, Student Selected Components, and research projects.

Engage with external stakeholders and networks to strengthen partnerships with the NHS and professional bodies.

Professorial level candidates are expected to demonstrate sustained national and international contributions to research, education, and leadership, and undertake formal School-level leadership roles.

Candidate Profile

  • Practicing GP with a track record in academic leadership and research.
  • Strong research expertise in general practice, primary care, or related public health areas.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and mentoring undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Ability to engage with and support colleagues across the NHS and research networks.
  • Leadership skills to influence curriculum development, research strategy, and professional development activities.
