Job Description
About the Role
The Sussex Energy Group, based within the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex Business School, is seeking to appoint a Senior Research Fellow to lead research on circular economy, material use, and energy reduction strategies.
This position is part of the Production and Consumption Transformation (PACT) research centre—a major new initiative jointly funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).
You will work under the supervision of Professor Matthew Lockwood and collaborate closely with researchers at Lancaster, Leeds, and Sussex Universities, as well as UK policymakers.
Your research will focus on understanding the institutional, policy, and regulatory frameworks that support or hinder the reduction of material throughput and energy use in production systems—particularly in industries such as automotive manufacturing and construction.
You will generate actionable insights for government and industry, contributing to both academic publications and policy recommendations that align with the UK’s industrial strategy and climate goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and contribute to research on circular economy, industrial sustainability, and material efficiency.
- Conduct field research, interviews, and qualitative data analysis on policy, governance, and business models.
- Work collaboratively across PACT partner institutions and engage directly with policymakers and industry stakeholders.
- Produce high-quality research outputs for academic journals, policy briefs, and public reports.
- Contribute to grant applications, supervision of junior researchers, and dissemination activities.
About You
You will hold a PhD (or equivalent experience) in geography, economics, political science, innovation studies, sustainability transitions, or a related field.
You should have:
- Proven expertise in political economy, governance, or policy analysis relevant to sustainability or circular economy.
- Experience in qualitative research methods, such as fieldwork, interviews, and data management.
- Strong analytical and writing skills, with a record of independent research and publication.
- Excellent communication abilities for engaging both academic and non-academic audiences.
- A proactive approach to collaborative and interdisciplinary research.
